Well, after looking back on some of the legendary Pokemon I have for recreational purposes, I’ve determined that about 90% of them are terrible. Sorry Cresselia. I love you, but… yeah. As some of the fellow players at the league I attend want to play some Ubers fights, I figured I’d take a little time away from the 5th gen metagame and start doing things in 4th gen. Almost all of 4th gen.
You see, there are a huge number of legendary Pokemon scattered across 4th gen. There are only a handful you can’t actually catch in the wild. However, because I caught them all at least once, and didn’t really pause to consider the ramifications of doing it half-baked, I’m going to have to go back through Diamond, SoulSilver and HeartGold and pick up what I already have all over again.
But, it’s not all bad. My Suicune, one of the last of my 4th gen EV trained team I used to conquer Red in SoulSilver, has gotten in a little extra recreational time. I took him through and won every rank of the Beauty Super Contest, and I went to the Resort Area and bought him the three stupid-expensive ribbons ($10,o00, $100,000, and $999,999, respectively), just because this Suicune is very special to me. I even sat and re-befriended him from neutral Happiness so that I could get the Footprint Ribbon. It makes me wish that GameFreak would replace the ribbon system into 5th gen. It’s a really interesting way to show off your Pokemon’s accomplishments and shower them with attention. It was also quite reminiscent, letting me go back and play with a Pokemon of mine from 4th gen’s glory days. If I still had my original team from SoulSilver in 4th gen, I’d have gone through and had them all perform in the Super Contests and get all massaged and befriended, because they were all a very special team, my first-ever EV trained and (mostly) IV bred team.
Anyway, lamentation and misty-eyed adoration over. I know some people I know will be of the mindset that states “why on earth would you restart Diamond and SoulSilver just to get a handful of Pokemon?”. To that, I would say that I’ll have fun revisiting those lands, battling trainers, and capturing quality Uber Pokemon. Sure, it’ll take a long while to get done, because I’ll essentially be replaying three games (maybe four if I decide to replay Pearl), and that is indeed soul-crushing to think about, but even though I felt a huge amount of anxiety over deleting my super-developed save file on SoulSilver and the time I’ll be re-investing in essentially defunct games, it’s about the Pokemon and the journey. And while I might lose some progress in 4th and feel sad for undoing what I spent hundreds of hours on over four years, I’ll have those Pokemon to carry back to 5th with me, especially Suicune, and I’ll be able to battle with them and enjoy them for (hopefully) many years to come. That’s what’s more important.
